The backside of populatiry

So finally I have got my first spam comments on the blog. Luckily, Akismet protected me from them being displayed. The spam comments were from two romainian sites, which looked like only being focused on spamming other blogs.

Great work, Akismet authors!

Photo gallery

I am working hard to get the photo gallery work really well. Right now I am populating it with  various photos I’ve taken, to make it a quite complete photo gallery. One thing I notice is that it requires quite a lot of disk space to have all images like this, but it is worth it.

So I present to you, the photo gallery. Enjoy!

Blog 2.0b1

As you regular readers already might have noticed, this site has undergone major work the last week. The old design has been removed, and finally I have created a theme I like myself. It is based on the fluidity theme, but the colors have changed to blue and I have tweaked the theme to fit my needs.

I also proudly present a very new function to this blog; the photo album. It features seamless integration with the Gallery2 webapp which is a great piece of software for creating image galleries.

The new version is still in beta, so all functions are not complete. Comments, for example, are on their way to become active, but I need to take som spam countermeasures first. Also, there are som css quirks still left to solve on the gallery integration, but those errors only affect me as an administrator.

I chose a flexible-width layout for accessibility and for the fact that I detest fixed-width themes. The purpose of this blog is to present what I want to write in a clear and intiutive way.

I need to change my writing as well. I have not performed enough updates on the textual information, and I have lost almost all of my readers. Hopefully, they will find their way back soon.

So in summary, this is my new homepage. Hopefully this will bring an end to all major visual overhauls and instead focus on the content. I hope you will enjoy reading!

IE trouble

I am having problems with my blog being rendered incorrectly in Internet Explorer. I’m working on the issues. But as for now, I highly recommend you to switch to the Mozilla Firefox browser.

WordPress 2.0

Although there don’t seem to be any visible changes for the reader (you), I’ve updated the backend of this blog’s software to WordPress 2.0. This update is really great, with a very much improved writing process that lets me write in bold, italics and strikethrough with just a few mouseclicks. I also tweaked the way the permalinks work, so now I use /archive/

as the permanent links. I prefer that approach instead of the standard, cryptic way.
I just came home from the long trip to the U.S. that me and my family went on during Christmas. We saw many beautiful sights of California and experienced our most warm Christmas holidays ever. Some random observations from during the trip:

  • Everybody is crazy about christmas
  • There are just as many ways to build a sink that there are sinks, I got really annoyed by having to figure out how to get water to shower in or wash my hands. Can’t people just use the straightforward and powerful approaches we use in the civilized world (Europe)?
  • The only thing that is more stupid than stupid sinks are cars. We spent a long time figuring out why the rental car we had needed to have the seat-adjustment controls placed that one almost always pressed them when opening the door.
  • Food. Enough said.
  • Elephant Seals are really cute

We saw the giant sequoias, the Pinnacles national monument, the Salinas valley, Morro Rock, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and many other places. We all had a great time and surely we will return to those parts of the world in the future.

Timestamping

Checked up the timestamp problem, and found the setting to be off by 20 (!) hours. I just configured wordpress to use the Swedish timezone UTC+1, and this last post is finally posted in the right time. The comment spam I mentioned a few minutes ago must therefore be posted at lunchtime yesterday. I guess the spammer was an immature person from my class at school who found a link and needed to have some fun.

First spam om this blog

Got my first comment spam tonight at 4 AM. The IP adress was 62.247.4.250; which is the same adress as my school. Either I have a problem with timestamps on my server, or the user posted from a faked IP. Nobody can stay in our school until 4 in the morning ;)

Server upgrade

Upgraded the server today, everything except the harddrive is new!
broach.se in now powered by a much more powerful Dell OptiPlex with a PIII 1GHz CPU and 256 MB ram. Nice!

Hackergotchi
