It’s summer!

Yes, summer is really here. The sun is shining and the skies are blue (for the most time).

Elida V has been growing and growing and she is a really beautiful ship now that most of the rigging is done and almost all railings are finished. Her colors is a blend of white, blue and mirror-polished stainless steel.

The final installations are underway, and Robert is working with the radio antennas.

Yum yum.

Some rigging details. Note the red light in the top of the main mast (seen on the third picture). This light is apparently required to be turned on while we are in harbour, this to alert airplanes!

I also bought a car! :)

Currently there are no camps on board, instead we have working days to finish the ship as much as we can before new camps come on board. Getting the firefighting systems and the main engine working were big steps that we now have finished.

Fire hose testing

That’s all for now. I am now officially on my last week on Elida for this year. I have been working here since August, but the summer work and the studying needs to take over in my life. I am leaving on Sunday!

Norgegatan 14

Yes! I have finally found me an apartment in Linköping for the next year. It is a five-roomer with a living area of 120 m² in upper Vasastaden, or Abisko, a few kilometers from the school. I will share it with three other people and have my own, furnished, room.

The flat is large, bright and fresh with large living areas. The kitchen is well sized and can take many guests if needed. My room is about 15 m² large and has a view to the back side of the house. There’s a balcony from the living room, an elevator and the people I will share it with seem friendly. All in all for 2500 SEK/month.

I just called and told the owner that I accept the offer and I will move in as soon as I get accepted to the school. Right now I feel so happy, I have been praying for some time to find a good place to live in for the next years, and the best of places landed just in front of me. I feel really grateful. As my friend Patra just told me “God really wants the best for you!”.

Sorry, I have not taken any photos yet, but there are a few photos at Picasa. The third photo shows my room.

Hot, hot, hot

Yes, it’s really June now. The summer has taken the whole west coast in a firm grip. It is really hot and humid and I am working in the office, making some more drawings, while I’m bathing in sweat. It’s

Ostindiefararen Götheborg has returned to the city. I was almost hoping for it to run aground in the same way as the original ship did three hundred years ago when it returned from it’s maiden voyage.

Now the freshwater and sewage systems are almost finished on the computer. Just send it in on monday and we’ll probably get it approved.

MPD problem with HTTP/1.1 chunked mode

I have been having problems with MPD not being able to listen to my icecast mpd stream that I create on my home server. The problem started to exist in 0.12.2, and I found the way to fix it.

MPD only says “invalid vorbis header” when trying to play the stream, but the problem is really that MPD not yet supports chunked mode HTTP encoding. To get around this, get a source code version of mpd, change line 468 in  inputStream_http.c to read HTTP/1.0 instead of HTTP/1.1.

Volvo Penta D6-310

This just in!

Two guys from Ö-varvet on Öckerö have been working the whole day working with the main engine on Elida.  Just now, they fired up the machine and unleashed the 310 kW of power into the water. The sound of the engine is a nice humming sound that has a hint of diesel power in it. Since the engine is fully electronic, I could not spot any exhaust gases coming out from the exhause pipe, the engine burns the fuel so efficiently that no soot nor ash is left.

Stefan drove the joystick forwards and backwards, violently thrusting the ship in the moorings. The propeller worked up a powerful stream of water gushing in the harbor, stirring up the water.

Too bad my camera is malfunctioning, the battery won’t accept any charge anymore. Time to get a new one…

Paradigms

I am back on the ship again working with getting it certified. I work closely with the skipper Stefan, and we are now receiving help from a third party consultant that guides us with primarily designing the bilge, fire and sprinkler systems on board. He is also taking care of the discussion with Sjöfartsverket, the Swedish Maritime Administration.

I just sent in 22 finished drawings documenting the whole electric system to the smallest cable and fuse. It has been very much to do, but I have also learnt a lot on it.

Stefan and the Elida Board have had a meeting with the Administration the other week, and they got a list of things to do before a certificate can be issued. It is a 30-point list that is very comprehensive. Happiness is now when you are able to remove one item from the list, usually Stefan gets one or two off every day.

Elida V is now a ship with masts! I need to get some photos up on this beauty, she is really looking like a real sailboat now.

Life on board is also becoming easier all the time, with toilets working in the crew cabin, the summer is getting closer with better and better temperatures, and the kitchen is working better. We also got a load of fire extinguishers, something I have felt a bit nervous about. Now the ship should be sufficiently secure for having camps on board.

SP, a company we have hired to write the fire safety report for us, have been working feverently to get the report finished. They just sent us a draft of the qualitative report documenting the prerequisites and how the ship is constructed. The test results and recommendations should come within a week or two. The fact that the Maritime Administration called their first report (110 pages stuffed with calculations, simulations and safety research) an “embyro” made SP write a sentence in legalese that basically degraded the Administration to idiots. Fun!
The fire report basically states that the only realistic source for fires on board the ship is a determined and deliberate fire. SP has not yet given their opinion in the report because it is preliminary, but reading the report reinforces our knowledge that we in fact have built a really safe ship.

I am a long-time user of christiantorrents.com, and I just found some good music that I downloaded. I have discovered Extol, a norwegian metal band that are very good musicians. Especially the song “Paradigms” makes me really happy.
