We are almost finished with our PM. George will not be here until next Monday, so we are unable to do anything else than write the obligatory PM. Everything feels good, we are ahead of time with the PM.

To this stupid headline I write about the summit we had about the different project groups. As a member of the LED research group, I and my colleauges presented our conclusion to the rest of the group. All the other groups also presented their accomplishments, and even though we have been researching thoroughly I am convinced that we never will be able to build even a prototype of the display.

Completed the report on the LED 3d Volumentric Display solution today. We also had a meeting in which we decided future directions and set up a time at which we will meet our supervisor.

My first real hack on ncmpc (and the first on a C program in general).
Get it here.
This patch on ncmpc allows the user to display the remaining time in the status bar instead of the elapsed time. The patch is to be applied onto the most recent svn version.

After hacking the source code for one hour, it appeared to me that the functionality I wanted already was available. I am using ncmpc, an excellent and small program that controls the mpd music player daemon, and wanted it to display how long each song in the playlist is and did not find an obvious example of how to do it.
I found it a useful project to start hacking the source and add the functionality, and I started to dig into the sourcecode. But the solution is actually to add the following to the configuration file ~/.ncmpc/config :
list-format = “[[%artist% - ]%title% (%time%)]|[%file (%time%)]”
Now you will se how long each song is when you browse and watch the playlist.
Hope this tip will help anyone.

Although there don’t seem to be any visible changes for the reader (you), I’ve updated the backend of this blog’s software to WordPress 2.0. This update is really great, with a very much improved writing process that lets me write in bold, italics and strikethrough with just a few mouseclicks. I also tweaked the way the permalinks work, so now I use /archive/
as the permanent links. I prefer that approach instead of the standard, cryptic way.
I just came home from the long trip to the U.S. that me and my family went on during Christmas. We saw many beautiful sights of California and experienced our most warm Christmas holidays ever. Some random observations from during the trip:
- Everybody is crazy about christmas
- There are just as many ways to build a sink that there are sinks, I got really annoyed by having to figure out how to get water to shower in or wash my hands. Can’t people just use the straightforward and powerful approaches we use in the civilized world (Europe)?
- The only thing that is more stupid than stupid sinks are cars. We spent a long time figuring out why the rental car we had needed to have the seat-adjustment controls placed that one almost always pressed them when opening the door.
- Food. Enough said.
- Elephant Seals are really cute
We saw the giant sequoias, the Pinnacles national monument, the Salinas valley, Morro Rock, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and many other places. We all had a great time and surely we will return to those parts of the world in the future.
