Project initialization

We initialized our project by meeting up with our mentor, George. He works at ABB Force Measurement and is doing development and research there. He talked about the purpose of the project, what we were to do, and what he know so far about the idea. Then we continued to discuss different ways to achieve the goal, different solutions and problems.
We learned the importance of preparing ourselves before meetings, since the questions we had prepared gave us important insight into the project.
As it seems now, we will be doing only pre-research and bureucracy work before Christmas, and that we can’t start doing real work before that.

Robotics competition roundup

Finally the robot that I and a few friends of mine have been working on is completed. We had a whole night of work in Wednesday, and after only one hour of sleep it was time to leave for Eskilstuna, where the competition would be held.
Our robot, called “pABBlo” after the painter Pablo Picasso, is a sort of grafitti robot which goes back and forth over a whiteboard with a pen and draws a pattern that the user has entered on a computer screen. The practical uses of this robot are very few, but it is a great show robot and we got a really good response.
Unfortunately we didn’t win anything except for a nomination in the most prestigeous class, Technology. I believe the fact that we didn’t win was that we didn’t utillize any sensors. But when you think about it, how many printers do you know about that uses sensors?
Anyway, we have had a great time, and as I am recovering sleep I return to the normal cycles of daily life, including a test in Chemistry in a few days.

Project Weblog

I will use this blog to keep the obligatory journal about the ABB Project I talked about a few days back. I know that usually when I try to make it a habit to write in a journal/blog/whatever, it fails miserably. However, this journal is required by the school so perhaps I’ll be able to make it.
